Sauze d'Oulx, forming a significant part of the larger Milky Way ski area (Via Lattea) which spans both Italy and France, offers over 400 km (248 mi) of ski runs in the combined area. The resort itself boasts 100 km (62 mi) of skiable terrain, spread across 61 pistes (11 greens, 25 blues, 19 reds, 6 blacks), and served by 13 ski lifts. In addition to the varied pistes, Sauze d'Oulx also features a snowpark, and two fun slopes. The ski area is divided into three main skiing sectors:
Sportinia: this sector is a central hub in the Sauze d'Oulx area, offering a variety of runs that cater to different skill levels. It is known for its wide, open slopes and is a popular area for both beginners and intermediates.
Jouvenceaux: this area offers a mix of picturesque runs, combining both scenic beauty and a range of slopes. It is particularly appealing for those seeking a quieter skiing experience away from the more crowded areas.
Fraiteve: serving as a connecting point to the larger Via lattea ski area, Fraiteve provides access to a wide range of additional slopes, expanding the skiing opportunities. This sector includes some of the more challenging runs in Sauze d'Oulx, catering to advanced skiers.
Skiing in Sauze d’Oulx
Beginners
The Sportinia sector is home to wide, open nursery slopes ideal for beginners. The area is easily accessible, either by bus from the town center or the Sportinia chairlift. For those making their first marks on the snow, the sunny and sheltered nursery slopes in Sportinia provide a comfortable starting point.
Intermediates
The expansive terrain offers ample cruising opportunities, perfect for refining technique. Notably, the Moncrons area and the path from Sportina to the Clotes chairlift stand out as favorites. Additionally, the interconnectedness of the Milky Way means intermediates can traverse notable distances, experiencing both treeline vistas and open terrains.
Advanced
While the resort does feature a significant portion of black-rated slopes, advanced skiers may find some of these runs similar to reds in other resorts. Nonetheless, runs like the Olimpico, leading from Mount Fraiteve to Sansicario village, and the black Malafosse offer thrilling descents that challenge even the most experienced.
Off-piste skiing
Following fresh snowfall, the tree runs in Sauze d’Oulx can become secluded pockets of powder paradise. Particularly, the Moncrons area is renowned for holding some of the best powder conditions, and crossing over to Montgenèvre offers iconic off-piste routes, enhancing the cross-border skiing experience.
Snowboarding
Boarders are bound to enjoy the winding reds amidst Sauze’s trees, offering both speed and scenery. Those with a penchant for freestyle can make their way to Sestriere’s snow park to showcase their flair on various features.

The ski season in Sauze d'Oulx typically runs from early December to mid April. Sauze d'Oulx snow history
Sauze d'Oulx offers optimal snow conditions from December through April, each month presenting unique opportunities for skiers. December and January consistently bring about 19 cm (7.4 in) of snow respectively, dispersed across roughly 2.5 days each week, ensuring regular fresh snow. February's snowfall slightly decreases to 17 cm (6.6 in) but it occurs more frequently, averaging 2.8 days per week. The pinnacle of snowfall arrives in the first week of March, traditionally the snowiest week in Sauze d'Oulx, with an impressive 31 cm (12.2 in) of snow over 3.6 days, making it a paradise for those who cherish Bluebird Powder Days, when sunshine and light winds follow fresh snowfall. The season stretches into April with enjoyable conditions, accumulating 13 cm (5.11 in) of snow over 2.8 days.
